The Willow School

Gladstone, NJ - The Willow School encourages the belief that everything is part of one complex matrix of living systems and incorporates this belief into its curriculum. The school building itself is a tool for teaching these lessons, both inside and outside of the classroom...[read more].

Design Process

We approach development with a collaborative design process, engaging all stakeholders to determine the best possible design that benefits all aspects of the surrounding community.

This means uniting all decision-makers and the surrounding community to be involved in the design process from the very beginning.

We uphold a standard such that every developmental decision we make must have a positive, regenerative impact on at least three systems.  This whole-systems assessment is illustrated in the diagram below:

Conventional Developers typically say one of two things: “Sell me this land so I can build on it,” or “Tell me what you want and I will build it.” This approach does not take into consideration the environmental, economic, or social impact that a project has on its community, all of which believe must be considered simultaneously.

  • Our design process places regeneration as the compass from which we make decisions.  We analyze how each of our decisions will impact all surrounding systems and vice versa.
  • We develop a master plan that takes into account each system and provides regenerative solutions for the whole.  For each project, our goal is to add a net benefit to the environmental, social, and economic systems that it touches.

Our developments begin with relationships as opposed to projects, and thus Ecological has adopted a relationship-oriented approach to deal sourcing.

  • We focus on creating deep and authentic relationships with municipalities and partners, thereby enabling us to better understand the needs and opportunities of the places in which we work.
  • Taking the time to establish non-displaceable relationships gives us significant exposure, provides a benefit to the municipality, and creates trust and credibility within the municipality for Ecological.
  • Such relationships then lead to future projects down the line.
